Oscar and Juan Gálvez Car Racing Track, Buenos Aires

The Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez stands as one of Argentina's most storied and revered motorsport venues. Located in Buenos Aires, this iconic circuit has been a cornerstone of racing in South America for over 70 years, hosting everything from legendary international events to the country's most beloved domestic series.

Update (January 2026): The Autódromo is currently closed for a major renovation. Works began in January 2026 and are expected to be completed by early 2027, ahead of the return of MotoGP. See details below.

Where Is the Gálvez Autodrome?

The circuit sits in the Villa Lugano / Villa Soldati area in the south of Buenos Aires, at Avenida Coronel Roca 6902. Built on what was once flat lowland on the city's outskirts, it offers wide open grandstand views of the entire circuit.

Getting there:

  • By car: Via Av. General Paz, Av. Coronel Roca, or Av. Escalada. Parking is available on site.
  • By bus: Multiple metropolitan bus lines serve the Villa Lugano area with stops on Av. Coronel Roca and Av. Cruz.
  • By train: The Belgrano Sur line connects the south of Buenos Aires to stations near the autodrome.

A Storied History

Opened in 1952 during the presidency of Juan Perón, the track was initially named "Autódromo 17 de Octubre." Its creation was spearheaded by prominent Argentine drivers, including the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio. The circuit later adopted its current name to honor the brothers Oscar and Juan Gálvez, who were titans of Argentine motorsport, winning an impressive 13 out of 14 Turismo Carretera championships between 1947 and 1960.

Over the decades, the Autódromo has hosted a wide range of world-class events, including:

  • 20 Formula 1 Argentine Grand Prix races
  • 10 Argentine Motorcycle Grand Prix events
  • The 1000 km Buenos Aires sports car race

Track Configurations: Circuit N° 8 and N° 12

The Autódromo was famous for its multiple layouts — two in particular were used most frequently:

  • Circuit N° 8: A technical 3.380 km layout that challenged drivers with its fast sections and a tricky infield.
Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez Circuit N° 8
  • Circuit N° 12: A longer, high-speed 5.651 km circuit, beloved by the powerful Turismo Carretera cars for its long straights.

Renovation 2026–2027: A New Autódromo

In January 2026, the Buenos Aires government began demolition of the existing pit buildings, marking the official start of the largest renovation in the circuit's history. The project, with an estimated budget of USD $100 million, is led by the Buenos Aires City government under Jorge Macri and designed by renowned track architect Hermann Tilke.

What's being rebuilt:

  • New pit complex with 32 garages and a new control tower
  • Track widened to 12 metres throughout and fully resurfaced to FIM and FIA standards
  • New main circuit layout of 4,300 metres with seven configuration variants
  • Grandstands expanded to a capacity of 150,000 spectators
  • Complete upgrade of safety systems to international standards

Works are expected to be completed by Q1 2027. The MotoGP Argentine Grand Prix will return to the circuit in 2027, with a contract running through 2030. A return of Formula 1 to Buenos Aires is also under evaluation from 2028.
